not born to die
«What happened (according to interviews) was that after creating enough tracks for a CD, she met Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys) and decided to redo many as single-take "live" performances at his studio. We may never know the original tracks, but the final ones have more bravura torch singing than her previous work. I'd give it about 4.5 stars. I don't think it surpasses her previous work (both released and unreleased), but there are songs on UV that reach the same heights, and she's not really repeating herself stylistically. IMO, she chose the strongest material for the album's singles, and these match the quality of the strong singles from Born to Die. However, BTD seems more saturated with possible singles and also seems more unified in style than UV. On the other hand, UV has a greater sense of spontaneity and variety which is lacking from BTD. On the other hand again, lyrics are de-emphasized and are getting simpler in UV (imo). She only includes lyric snippets (printed over West coast photographs) in her liner notes. UV starts with its longest song "Cruel World", whose lyrics relate to fond memories of a bad relationship and the relief of having it be in the past, after which songs seem to come in similar pairs. So, for instance, "Ultraviolence" and "Shades of Cool", which are both album singles, sound quite a bit like Bond-film songs. UV is a great example of "baroque pop" that gets strong emotions out of its arrangements (clavichord-like piano, synthetic strings, understated syncopated (?) tympanic drumming, and choral backings). SOC actually samples the James Bond theme in the guitar. It has "torch" singing in the verses, high bright vocals in the chorus, and (unintelligible) ad libs in the retro monster-guitar bridge. "Brooklyn Baby" (my favorite track) and "West Coast", which are also album singles, have autobiographic and geographic themes. While they are relatively happy songs, they are still ballads by pop standards. "Sad Girl" and "Pretty When You Cry" are about drugged-out boyfriends for whom the female protagonist has an unbreakable addiction. Both are jazzy or bluesy with some excellent torch singing in SG and some interesting bruised or about-to-cry singing in PWYC. These are followed by dark trip-hop songs about LDR's negative public opinion. "Money Power Glory" is a deliciously cynical character study of how her haters view her. "... My Way Up to the Top" is about a mysterious diss target, envy, and love. I especially like its distorted loon sample in the chorus, which is like a Born-to-Die flashback. Finally, a pair of nostalgic songs close the standard album. "Old Money" is a Born-to-Die/Paradise style song which mourns lost youth. The song samples (or at least refers to) music from Nino Rota's "What is a Youth" song from Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet film, which similarly mourns youth. So I have to wonder: why isn't this sample (and other samples in UV) credited? LDR's cover of "The Other Woman" (made famous by Nina Simone) has beautiful instrumental arrangements and many diva-esque moments. For instance, she powerfully wails the word "alone" when the lyrics run out but spends an additional 20 seconds slow scatting (like a stroll in the park) before ending the song on one last serenely sung "alone". I really don't like the idea of bonus and region/vendor-exclusive tracks as it really murks up exactly what the release is; however, that said, the bonus tracks on the deluxe CD are good. "Black Beauty" was a song leak (and a fan favorite), whose leaking may have caused her next album to become UV rather than something else. Following are "Guns and Roses", which is probably not about Axl or the group, and "Florida Kilos", which is definitely about cocaine. Whether FK glamorizes a bad lifestyle or is just a character study of her old chums is left for the listener to decide. In any case, FK is exciting for me because she uses her leaks/unreleased vocal style. With the bonus tracks UV is over an hour, though I still wish she'd have added other leaks from the time of "Black Beauty" and made a proper double album or maybe even a parallel one.»

Review for the album «Chandelier (Single) (2014)»

Sia

1. Chandelier

Album Even Better!
«My taste in music varies from rock to pop to rap to metal to R&B to indie genres to pretty much anything whether its popular or unknown. Well Sia Furler, shortened to Sia is one of those rare artists. She has been around for years and is just now hitting it big in the US. I came to know her as a songwriter who penned many big hits for many huge artists. I also knew one of her early songs "Breathe Me" thanks to its masterful usage in the series finale of the show "Six Feet Under". But still, even though she was the puppeteer behind multiple successful songs, she never had her own song headlined by herself. She was almost a legend in the music business. She had a hit with "Titanium", but the credit mostly went to David Guetta. She had a hit with Flo Rida, but again, credit wasn't typically thrown in her direction. Well things took a turn when she released her catchy and powerful song "Chandeliers" along with it's viral video. Her depiction as a great singer who didn't want her face exposed during live performances also caught much attention. Well I'm the type of guy that still buys CDs on a regular basis if the CD is worth it. I needed some new music and found out this album just came out and was on sale, so I made a impulse buy with it. At first I thought I was gonna feel less masculine buying it, but after giving the album a few listens, I realized this was a modern masterpiece. Here is a track by track review. 1. Chandelier: The song is a powerful lead single with a chorus that many will cover and sing along to at concerts. Though a lot of the lyrics again are aimed at females, I still love the song and feel the chorus each time it hits. Definitely a worthy song to kick off her long awaited recognition around the world. 9.5/10 2. Big Girls Cry: When I saw the title of this song on the track list I immediately thought I was going to skip this song because, you know, I'm not a girl. But then I listened to it. Its a powerful song that tells a story. Thats how I approach this song. I'm listening to the story of a girl delivered through great vocals. My girlfriend would probably relate more to these types of lyrics of course. Her singing in this one really reminds me of her amazing performance in "Breathe Me". Very emotional song. I proudly listen to this song as an experience! 9.5/10 3. Burn The Pages: This is a very uplifting upbeat pop song. A good one. The synths and pianos and of course the singing. Another catchy chorus but not as powerful as some of her songs that really showcase her range. Still a great song with many layers. 9/10 4. Eye Of The Needle: This song contains her signature strange but beautifully powerful vocal performances. People without prior knowledge of Sia will think she is trying to sound like Katy Perry or Rihanna, but in reality those artists took cues from Sias songs and this one will be another influential track! The "whoah oh oh" parts are infectious. Great emotional lyrics and production. This could be another good single. One of her best songs. 9.5/10 5. Hostage: This one seriously sounds like Sias take on a Neon Trees song but with much better vocals. At first I thought the chorus was too weird, but toward the end things get stripped down in a beautiful way and I appreciated the chorus more and more after that! Not the best song, but still a great catchy track. 9/10 6. Straight For The Knife: Another song that my girlfriend would relate to more lyrically. But aside from personal perspective I can appreciate the message of this slower song. Not one of my favorites but still a great slow burner ballad that I'm sure many others will like. 8.5/10 7. Fair Game: The style of this song really reminds me of Sara Bareilles. Another slow song in the first part, but much better than the previous track. The vocals again showcase her great range. Towards the end the production gets quicker without turning too upbeat in a beautiful fashion. The final minute really completes this experience of a song. 9.5/10 8. Elastic Heart: This is the best song on the album in my personal opinion. The PBR&B style of the song is amazingly perfect. The vocals again bring back the heartbreaking beauty of "Colour the Small One". The lyrics are dark and uplifting at the same time. Expect to hear many covers of the song on Youtube and Competitions. Could be a good single choice! 10/10 9. Free The Animal: There is something about this song that brings to mind the 80s such as Madonna. The chorus is anthem worthy. There are a lot of distortions that work really well in the track. The bridge part is quick and great to lead to the final chorus. I really love the small layers of the song you have to really listen for. Great club track! 9.5/10 10. Fire Meet Gasoline: Wow the great tracks just keep coming up in this album. I keep bringing up the vocals because I can never praise Sia enough about it. Not only is this one catchy, but its so powerful! I know I keep talking about catchy choruses, but this one is truly amazing. I personally think her performance on this song makes Adele look like a karaoke singer. That's really saying something. Another perfect song and worthy single. 10/10 11. Cellophane: This one has another much darker tone to go with the dark lyrics. But her style is so perfect that she turns it into a gorgeous track. The thumping but subtle beat reminds me of a heart beat. At first wasn't one of my favorites, but now it's without a doubt one of her best performances. 10/10 12. Dressed In Black: I was again at first reluctant because of the title, but what I found was another beautiful track when I listened. The instruments and production are some of the best on the entire album. This is really an epic song to end the album perfectly! 6 minutes goes by fast with this song. 9.5/10 So this was one of the most cohesive albums in this genre I've heard. It doesn't just sound like a collection of random hits that have no relation to each other. It sounds like a full album of songs that have this consistent vibe throughout. There are no duds or fillers at all in the mix! Each song has this musical or vocal element to it that I can't describe, but it keeps coming back in different songs of the album either in an entire track or as a smaller aspect to compliment things. Like I said, people who didn't know of Sia before will hear many songs on the album and compare her to many contemporary artists today, but little do they know these artists are the ones who were influenced by Sia herself! Not only is this Sias breakthrough album that will definitely sell well and create hits, but it is also possibly her best album since "Colour The Small One", maybe even better! She seriously has one of the best singing voices I've ever heard in my life. What a surprise this was. For me this is a contender for Album of The Year! This is a modern classic. Anyone who loves great singing and music can enjoy her powerful vocals and infectious style. Definitely worth a purchase!»

Great Listening!
«I started out as a casual fan of Paramore, but gradually, both albums grew on me, and now they're one of my top 5 favorite bands. I tend to think of myself as being a little outside the demographic of Paramore fans, being in my late 20's, but I don't care! I've been anxiously awaiting the release of this album, and to be honest, it's one of the first time in years that I've paid attention to the 'official release date' from any album. Paramore has catchy, rock driven tunes with smart, well written lyrics. Hayley Williams' vocals are amazing...for such a tiny person she sure has a set of powerhouse pipes. I actually had expected this album to be a lot darker then the 1st two albums, after hearing the first single, "Ignorance" and also knowing they were going thru some personal band turmoil while recording "brand new eyes". But besides "Ignorance", there is no huge addition of somberness compared with the other albums. Paramore has progressed and grown, while still retaining their distinct Paramore sound. I also think the drummer, Zac Farro, was given a little more liberty in letting the drums really lead and set the tone on a few songs. There are two quieter, pretty songs "Misguided Ghosts" and "The Only Exception". Thinking back, I can't recall any slower jams on the other albums that are acoustic and lacking drums like "Misguided Ghosts", and that stood out for me. But don't take that the wrong way, they're both awesome songs, and show a different side of what Paramore can accomplish. After listening to the album for at least a week straight, I really have been looking forward to those two tracks, as well as "Careful" and "All I Wanted". While writing this review I struggled to find something I didn't like about this album(trying to be well rounded and not just chock full of praise!), and I'm sorry, but I couldn't come up with anything, I'm a fan, not a critic. On the whole, the album is awesome and I think will stand out as one of the year's best Rock/Alternative albums, just like "Riot!" did in 2007. A must have in my opinion. Also if you have a chance to see them live, go! I don't like live shows as much as I used to, but I never miss Paramore, they put on a stellar show.I'm in the middle of listening to the album for the third time as I write this review. The initial listens were great. The band has really fine tuned its sound following up their excellent Riot! The strongest members of this band are the lead singer, Hayley Williams, and drummer,Zac Farro. I feel that the reason why these members stick out (other than Hayley's unbelievable amount of cuteness) is that they have been the forerunners on previous albums. This still rings true for Brand New Eyes but we also get to see guitarists, Josh Farro and Taylor York, doing some cool riffs as well as solos. Also the bassist, Jeremy Davis, gets to lay down a meaty bass line in Brick By Boring Brick (not as epic as Fences but still pretty good) as well as doing a solid job on all the other songs. Overall it feels like the band keeps getting tighter as they refine their sound. -The album starts out at a blazing pace with Careful. This song screams classic Paramore (a good thing). -Ignorance keeps the momentum moving with another song that sounds like classic Paramore. Watch out for the 15 second long shredding solo near the end! -Playing God is where the momentum shifts to a slower more emotional pace. Just need to point out that the Paramore boys get to do some backing vocals on this album starting with this song. Not the strongest track on the album but not bad by any means. -Brick By Boring Brick as I mentioned earlier has an awesome bass line! Very strong song. -Turn It Off is a slower song that picks up its pace during the chorus. Hayley takes the center stage on this song showing off her vocal awesomeness. The instrumental ending is a very nice touch. -The Only Exception busts out the acoustic guitars. I can easily see this song showing up in a movie during a very melancholy montage. Just a tidbit this is the longest Paramore song to date... -Feeling Sorry is a pretty solid song. Noting really exceptional but still good. -Looking Up is much like Feeling Sorry. Nothing special but still a good song. -Where The Lines Overlap follows the same formula as the last two songs, however this song is a bit better. Once again I really dig the instrumental ending! -Misguided Ghosts brings the acoustic guitars out again. Brilliant song. Hayley shows just how beautiful her voice is. My only complaint is that this song ends to early. -All I Wanted starts out slow but picks up as the song progresses. Very solid song that is a fitting end to the album. Overall a great album that pushes the band forward. If you are looking for Riot 2.0 you may be a bit disappointed as the band tries some new things. My only complaint about the album is that there isn't a song that enters your head and never leaves. Heck I've had dreams with That's What You Get in it.»
